5th, 6th and 7th of April 2019 : First convergence meeting

Transformative economies insist in placing life in the centre of socioeconomic organization. In that sense, we formulate the meeting as an organic and collective process of sustaining life, similar as, for instance, taking care of a vegetable garden with common management. We will use that example, which concentrates parts of the different movements that will participate in the meeting, to explain the different stages in which the work will be distributed during these three days.

5th, 6th and 7th of April 2019 : First convergence meeting

Work meeting 5th-7th April

Participants : agencies connected with different axes, representatives of networks and social movements at the local and international level

Main goals

-Create spaces for recognition between different movements and transformative actions of the transformative economies

- Promote convergences where movements and transformative actions organize around shared challenges

-Organize these actions and movements to plan and execute the actions to face each of the shared challenges

Methodology

- We will have debate spaces with innovative formats, to make easier participation and listening of all voices

- Debates will be structured around each movement, but with convergence spaces for discussion between all of them, in order to identify and prioritize shared challenges

- We will have spaces for informal interaction between different agents of transformative economies, to allow mutual recognition and exchange of experiences

- Participants will find a help point for registration and access to online participation platform

- We will also have interactive spaces to collect experiences, thoughts and feelings generated by the meeting

- An inaugural ceremony will be held on Friday 5th april, open to the citizenship. The rest of spaces will remain restricted only to people invited to the meeting.

- Through different itineraries, proposals of organizations located in Barcelona will be introduced, in order to share good practices and know first-hand different initiatives from transformative economies.

Useful information
The first day will be used to explore the field of transformative economies. As we do when we want to start a crop, the first thing to do is get to know the field features: if you have nearby water sources, how are light and shadow impacting on the area, which is the soil composition, how is the climate in that region...

So this first day will be focused on knowing the different movements, and the different transformative actions, which participate in the meeting: how are they, in which areas have they been working, which are their knowledges, experiences and progresses, and which resistances, challenges or difficulties are they facing. We will try to value and share the path of all these agents through the time, a trajectory that shapes a common substratum of accumulated experiences, which nourishes and supports many different debates.

We will work distributed by movements, in order to bring together, first of all, people who share the same field of action, to make easier mutual recognition and peer-to-peer dialogue. At the same time, it will be an space of self-definition of each movement, its identity and its reach. Once we have recognized the path we have walked, we will try to think in the current panorama and the shared challenges for the future in each of the movements. Putting these challenges in common will allow us to draw the next steps.

This first day will close with an event open to the citizenship, with the aim of letting people who are not involved in this first working meeting explore the field of transformative economies, and get to know how to participate in this process.

The second day will be dedicated to set up relationships between the different movements and transformative actions of the economy. Once we have defined the features of the field where we want to start our crops, we plan which species we will grow, and how could we make a better profit of the way these plants interact: some of them prepare the soil and nourish it for the following season, others offer shadow or bring support to different species... etc. Each plant communicates with its environment through its branches, leaves and roots, and sets up communication systems which cover broader lands.

These communications not only affect crops, but also woods, wild plants, fauna and the rest of life forms around the crops which grow in an spontaneous way. All of them shape an ecosystem in which different living things are interdependent. In a similar way, the different movements communicate, feedback, link and interact between them to create the common network of transformative economies.

We will try to find which are the points where their challenges converge, and how can they support and learn from each other to answer to these common challenges. We will value complementarities, mutual relationships, transversal alliances, links and symbiosis possibilities between the different movements.

We will work in groups, each of them composed by members of all movements and transformative actions. We will try to recognize different challenges, define necessary actions to answer these challenges, and to reach an agreement on which are more urgent.

Once we have identified the challenges, the working teams will organize around each of them. We will try to analyze again which is the substratum, which were the strategies used so far to answer each of these challenges, and which other transformative actions can we take from now on, taking advantage of the contacts and networking between the movements.

This second day will close with many itineraries through different initiatives and collectives from the transformative economies in the city of Barcelona, in order to get to know these projects in a more tangible way, and to exchange experiences.

The third day will be dedicated to define which way do we organize the links between the different movements and the transformative actions to decide how to answer to the identified challenges. If we go back to the example we were using before, although plants can grow in an autonomous and spontaneous way, we decide to plan the crops to take a better profit of the available land, the different seasons of the year...

We decide, for instance, if we want to make crop rotations and seasonal fallows, or which fruits do we want to harvest in the farming cycle. Something similar happens with the transformative economies movements: in an autonomous way, they have already created alternatives to the hegemonic system, which are linked between them.

Now we will try to discuss how can we reinforce these links through defined organization systems, with participation tools to guarantee the presence of more voices, and to build a sense and a basis of common consensus. We will work, first of all, with local convergences, linking the groups that are geographically closer, to discuss about how to organize, participate and make decisions in different territories.

After that, we will open a space for consensus and validation of the proposals: the convergence assembly, where shared challenges and transformative actions to work towards WSFTE 2020 will be introduced. The aim is that these challenges and transformative actions continue beyond 2020. We will have a space to debate the proposals, trying to reach a consensus to guide the path for next months.

In the same assembly space we will discuss the governance scheme of the process, and the participation tools proposed. We will receive and debate the different contributions, and once again we will try to close these exchanges by reaching a consensus.

After the assembly sessions, we will close this first meeting, with the aim of keeping on working and discussing locally, in the local convergences, and internationally, using the virtual participation platform.
